Historical Places in Kemeraltı

Konak (Atatürk) Square is the place I recommend you to start the tour. İzmir Clock Tower, built in 1901, is the symbol of Izmir. Right next to it is Konak Mosque, the construction of which was completed in the 1770s. Hasan Tahsin First Bullet Monument is located on the sea side of the square.

The Inn

The Kızlarağası Hanı is an inn built in the mid-1700s. It is one of the rare structures in Izmir that has survived from the Ottoman period. There are usually silver shops, souvenir shops inside. While visiting the inn, you will realize that it is in a pleasant environment with the scent of incense.

You will see a reed bed on the sea-facing side of Kemeraltı. It is forbidden to enter. I don't know why, but there is no excavation here. An 1800-year-old Roman bath...

Hisar Mosque, dating from the late 1500s, will be the first priority I think. In addition, Salepçioğlu Mosque and Kestanepazarı Mosque are also popular places. The 17th century Senora Synagogue and Shalom Synagogue are two other important sites in the region.

Where is Kemeraltı? And how to go to Kemeraltı?

Kemeraltı Bazaar is located in the central district (Konak) of İzmir. We can say that it is literally in the center of İzmir. Depending on where you are coming from, the transportation situation will vary. On the other hand, my suggestion is that you start your tour by entering from the bay side...

İzmir Tram
Konak Tram

If there is an İZBAN (İzmir Suburban) station in your location,
you can consider the tram or metro option.
For tram and metro transfer,
you should get off at Halkapınar stop.

  1. Konak Tram works between Fahrettin Altay and Halkapınar. If you come by tram, you should get off at Konak Iskele stop.
  2. If you are coming by metro running between Bornova and Fahrettin Altay, you can get off at Konak stop.
  3. The most ideal option for those coming from Karşıyaka or Bostanlı would be the ferryboat. There are frequent ferry services to Konak.
