From the Barrack to a Library: Rami Library

The Rami Library, which has been restored from the Rami Barracks and converted into a library, has been opened on an area of 220 decares, with a landscape area of 51 thousand square meters.

Rami

Rami Barracks, built in the second half of the 1700s during the reign of Mustafa III, one of the Ottoman sultans, is located in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul. The building, which was used as a barracks and a military school during the Ottoman period, was also used as a barracks in the Republican period. The building, which was transferred to the use of the municipality in the 1980s, also hosted food wholesalers for a while.

The idea of transforming it into a library emerged in 2010 and the restoration process started in 2014. It was opened in 2023. As a library complex, there are different libraries in it. In this way, it has achieved the title of the largest library in Istanbul. The Rami Museum, which is Turkey's first and currently the only Biosphere Sustainable Museum Certificate, provides service for 24 hours. There also a bookstore, cafes, multimedia section, workshops, accessible resources centre, exhibition halls, seminar halls as well.

How to get to the Rami Library?

The library is located on the European side of Istanbul and right next to Fatih and Beyoğlu districts, which are heavily visited by tourists. When you take the M1A or M1B metros, it is a 20-minute walk when you get off at Sağmalcılar station. If you prefer the T4 tram, you will walk for 600 meters when you get off at the Rami station.
