Some Dates in 2023 and Tips for Your Traveling to Türkiye

National holidays, elections and other special days may affect travel dates. As the first month of 2023 passes, I would like to share a few special days you may want to know...

April

Religious Holiday: This year, Holiday of Breaking the Fast begins on April 21. Before the three-day holiday, that is, on April 20, government institutions and banks work half a day.

National Holiday: April 23, National Sovereignty and Children's Day.

May

National Holiday: May 1, Labour Day.

Elections: The calendar for the general and presidential elections in Türkiye pointed to June. However, for now, it is thought to be May 14. On Sunday, May 14, elections will be held all over Türkiye. So don't think about planning an activity for that day. In addition, some of the election bans will start on Saturday, May 13. Therefore, I would not recommend adding May 13 to your plan. Meanwhile, if the president is not elected on May 14 (if a candidate does not get more than 50% of the vote), second one will be held two weeks later, on May 28.

National Holiday: 19 May, Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.

June

School: Except for undergraduate, all previous schools will start summer vacation on June 16. There is no standard timetable for universities in Türkiye; but the calendar is the same for all previous degrees.

Religious Holiday: The Holiday of Sacrifice begins June 29. Before the four-day holiday, there will be a half-day holiday on 28 June.

July

National Holiday15 July, Democracy and National Unity Day.

August

National Holiday30 August, Victory Day.

October

National Holiday30 October, Republic Day.

Tips

  • Two religious holidays in Türkiye are also public holidays. Before the first day of these two, it is called "Arife" and a half-day holiday is applied.
  • On national holidays, all workplaces are closed except restaurants, cafes etc. Therefore, while making your plans for these special days, I can recommend you to check whether it is open.
  • For students, the start of summer vacation means an increase in the population of the holiday regions. Therefore, I recommend that you make your hotel and flight reservations before 16 June. After June 16, prices may increase.
  • During religious holidays, the second one, which coincides with the summer season, will be crowded in hotels. I recommend that you do not plan a trip for those dates.
  • If you're in town on national holidays, you may want to watch the parades. Public concerts can also be held in the evening.
  • The first two weeks of June can be considered for vacation, but I do not recommend after June 16. The fact that students are on vacation and there is a religious holiday at the end of the month indicates that after July 2, it will be good.
