A Local Taste: Odun Meatball

Odun means "wood" in Turkish. The name of the Odun Meatball (Odun Köftesi) comes from the wood used. The wood that gives the name to the meatballs is from the oak tree. Let's take a look at this local delicacy together...

Salihli Odun Meatball

Odun meatballs are a flavor unique to the Salihli district of Manisa, one of the Aegean cities. So I don't think you can find it anywhere outside of this district.

Sheep or lamb mince is used in this delicious dish, which is a variation of shish meatballs (shish kofta), one of the most popular products of Turkish cuisine. Meatballs brought to the service are removed from the skewers while being placed on the plate. In the best restaurants, even if you ask for a portion, half a portion is served and the rest is given later. This prevents the food from getting cold.

Served with roasted tomatoes, roasted peppers and yogurt. Ayran or cold soft drink can be considered as a beverage.

My favorite place had been Azaklar. I suggest you try this local flavor, which has been registered and geographically indicated by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office since 2008, in Azaklar or someone else...

How to get to Salihli?

Salihli is one of the southern districts of Manisa. If you are in İzmir and you are going by road in the direction of Uşak-Afyon-Ankara, you will pass through Salihli.

Tip: If you drive from İzmir to the city center of Manisa, that is, if you are going in the direction of İstanbul, you are unlikely to stop by Salihli.
