Northern Cyprus: Famagusta Walled City

Famagusta is one of the historical areas of Northern Cyprus. In this post, you can find some historical places from the area that was the first settlement (inside the castle/fortification). The first settlement of the city, whose history dates back to BC, is Salamis. I will write about Salamis, which is a place of ruins, in another post.

In the 1200s, the construction of the castle walls was began. The photos in the post also belong to the years after that.

Architectural originality can be observed even in houses. I can only share one because of the photo quality.

The ruins of the Venetian Palace are perhaps the first place worth seeing...

The Othello Castle is another point of visit. It is also known as Othello's Tower.

The Church of Sts. Peter and Paul (Sinan Pasha Mosque) was used as a mosque during the Ottoman period and its name was changed to Sinan Pasha. Another one of the places worth seeing...

The ruins of Church of St. George of the Latins, the construction of which began in the 1300s, is one of the most magnificent places.

The ruins of Church of St. George of the Greeks is one of the largest churches in the city. This church can sometimes be confused with the church of the Latins.

I recommend that you definitely visit the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, one of the two biggest mosques on the island. Built as a cathedral in the 1300s, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas' name was later changed to the Saint Sophia Mosque. since the 1950s, it has been open for worship as the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.

How to Get Famagusta?

Most of the hotels in Northern Cyprus are located in Kyrenia. There are also accommodation facilities in Nicosia, Iskele and Famagusta. If you are staying in Famagusta, you can easily reach this area on foot. Since the air temperature will be quite high in the summer period, you can rent a car or take a taxi. If you are staying somewhere other than Famagusta, you can reach it by public transport. On the other hand, I cannot say that public transport is good in Northern Cyprus. Therefore, you can consider the option of a taxi or a rented car.
